Supporting Your Body With Herbal Infusions
One of our most beloved methods to enhance wellbeing and support your body is to create medicinal herbal infusions—a powerful wellness practice that’s beyond amazing and seemingly somewhat unknown.
Herbal infusions are far more healing and beneficial than a simple cup of tea. This practice is all about depth, nourishment, and fullness. By gathering potent medicinal herbs and soaking them long term (6-8 hours, usually overnight), the healing benefits reach peak potential. The sacred and simple process derives all of the concentrated nutrients, vitamins, antioxidants, and minerals from these gorgeous medicinal plants and infuses them into a beautiful concoction of healing nourishment for our bodies.
The creation process is therapeutic and results in deep wellness of body, mind, heart, and soul. That’s why we’re so passionate about sharing this beautiful, simple, and sacred process with the world.
HOW TO MAKE HERBAL INFUSIONS
With an array of vitamins and minerals herbal infusions are a beautiful way to gently nurture our bodies and offer ourselves powerful nutrients from the earth. When we are deeply, fully nourished, we feel most vital.
An herbal infusion differs from tea in that you steep it for 4-8 hrs (typically overnight), rather than only 5-20 minutes. Herbal infusions are a potent source of vitamins, minerals, and plant constituents that help to rebuild our cells, while simultaneously boosting immunity and reducing inflammation. Drinking 2-4 cups of these herbs daily will support and nourish your whole body while gently alleviating imbalances and healing common ailments.
Hot infusions - Hot water draws oils, enzymes, and vitamins from the leaves, flowers and aromatic roots of herbs creating a nutrient-rich, health-enhancing brew. Many herbs have an affinity for hot infusions including: alfalfa, burdock, ginger root, dandelion root or leaves, lemon balm, red raspberry leaf, red clover, holy basil, hawthorn leaves & flowers, linden leaves & flowers, and nettle (hot or cold).
Infusions tend to stay potent & fresh for 24-48 hrs, some may last longer depending on the mineral content as herbs high in minerals tend to spoil quickly. Once they’ve cooled - store them in the fridge to keep them fresh.
Cold Infusions - Cold water is best for herbs with delicate essential oils, mucilaginous herbs, working with fresh herbs, and when making a sun-tea in the summer months. Some herbs that are best for cold infusions are: Peppermint, spearmint, lemon balm, slippery elm, marshmallow root, rose buds & leaves, and stinging nettle.
HOW TO MAKE AN HERBAL INFUSION
Add 2-4 tbsp (or a few decent pinches) of dried herbs into a 32 oz mason jar.
(You can add more or less of herbs you desire, but it is recommended to use at least 1 oz of herbs per 32 oz of water)Cover completely with boiling (or cold, filtered) water.
Cover with a loose lid (unless cold), and let sit for 4 -8 hours for leaves and hardy flowers, or 8 hours for roots and barks.
Let your hot infusion sit on the counter (overnight) for 8 hours
If cold, lid and shake and place your cold infusion in the refrigerator overnight
Strain with a mesh strainer and Enjoy!
*Infusions are most potent for 48 hours in the refrigerator and some may last up to 1 wk - those with a higher mineral content tend to stay fresh for just a few days.
The ritual of making herbal infusions each day is a powerful practice, as it provides a sense of commitment to yourself and communion to the earth and its offerings. When you drink in a plant, you’re not only taking in nutrients, but you’re also connecting to the heart of the planet and all that unites and creates us. To begin, try out a few different infusions and choose the herb that calls to you, feels good in your body, and nourishes you on every level.
